About Elbe River Landscape Biosphere Reserve

The Elbe River Landscape Biosphere Reserve spans approximately 400 square kilometers along the Middle Elbe river corridor, crossing parts of the German states of Saxony-Anhalt, Brandenburg, and Saxony. This protected area preserves extensive natural floodplains, alluvial forests, meadows, oxbow lakes, and river channels, which together support a rich biodiversity. The reserve plays a critical role in maintaining the natural hydrological regime of the Elbe River, crucial for the health of numerous rare and endangered species, including the white-tailed eagle, European otter, and various migratory fish.

Established in 1997 and designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1997, the area combines conservation and sustainable development goals, balancing the needs of wildlife with public access and local agriculture. Visitors can explore marked hiking and cycling trails following the Elbe’s course and enjoy birdwatching towers strategically placed for observing numerous bird species, especially during migration seasons in spring and autumn.

The biosphere reserve contains historically important towns and landmarks such as the town of Dessau-Roßlau and the Magdeburg water bridge. Its floodplain forests, which regenerate naturally through seasonal flooding, offer a rare glimpse into dynamic river landscapes. Outdoor enthusiasts value the reserve for paddling along calm oxbow lakes, fishing, and photography, with the continuous rhythm of the river shaping both land and life. The Elbe River Landscape Biosphere Reserve is a significant natural heritage area that invites visitors to witness one of Europe's most intact lowland river systems.
